Hey there, welcome back!
Today we're going to give a look at the Official Apology from Chuck Norris to Bruce Lee.
We have a handwritten letter from Chuck and also an interview where he opens up publicly about their friendship. Following, the video and a deepening of the background story to this apology.
First things first, in case you don't know the whole story behind the friendship between Bruce Lee and Chuck Norris, we'll clear up the context for you.
So, at the end of the 60s', in 1968 to be precise, Chuck and Bruce met at a Karate Tournament.
They were staying in the same Hotel in California so there was basically no chance for them not to meet.
They met in the Hotel and almost immediately started talking about all things martial arts and started to exercise together that same night. Finally, one could say that their first encounter somehow gave form to their future friendship, since Chuck and Bruce would meet to train and exercise together.
However, Chuck very soon started to spread rumors that he didn't train with Bruce and that Bruce wasn't indeed his teacher. Basically, Chuck Norris had gone around lying to people about their friendship and their training.
In the letter from Chuck Norris to Bruce Lee, you can see Chuck saying that he was really, really sorry about the lies that he has been telling around, that he feels very bad and ashamed about himself, and that he indeed considers himself to be his teacher.
Finally, in the video interview, Chuck officially says that they both trained together and that, if Bruce would have gone down the competition pathway (like today's MMA), he would have been an incredible fighter, a successful one.
Chuck Norris
Well, we worked out in his backyard and he had a bag back there. So, we did a lot of punching, a lot of kicking, and we did a lot of exercises. A lot of push-ups, a lot of sit-ups. But the thing is that Bruce was a very rare type of individual.
Exercise conditioning was his life and when I did the movie with him, you know, and doing that fight scene with him... just seeing how fast he was and what an incredible athlete he was.
It was really an honor to be able to fight against him in this film. But the thing is that our exercise routine lasted about three hours, and it consisted of push-ups, sit-ups, kicking the bag, and sparring.
We would spar what we call attacking techniques, where I'd attack him and he'd defend. Then he would attack me and I would defend. And this went on for 3 years until he left for Hong Kong to pursue his movie career, which I've already told you about.
But no, the thing is that we were respectful to each other as we worked out and sparred. No, Bruce and I never fought, you know? Because he didn't have to go the competitive route, you know? Bruce was already a star and he didn't have to become a fighter to develop that thing.
I did, I had to become a fighter to develop the recognition that I got. Bruce didn't have to go that route.
But I think if Bruce had, he would have done extremely well in the fighting realm.
