Hello there, welcome back!
This is the original recording of Ip Chun's response to William Cheung's declaration about being the chosen one by Grandmaster Ip Chun during an interview. Further context is explained in the article following the video. Following, Ip Chun's take on "How to learn Wing Chun" will be shared.

Context

Basically, the story here is not that different from what we have seen so far with many other "special" Yip Man's students. William Cheung, who personally trained in Yip Man's School and then moved to Australia where he opened his own school, claimed on multiple occasions that he truly is the only person to know "Traditional Wing Chun".
That's to say, he's the only one to know the actual Yip Man system, and that he was chosen by the Grandmaster as the sole heir.

He stated this as an explanation for the fact that the Wing Chun taught in his schools is unique and differs from other Sifu Wing Chun. Although this version might have convinced many people, Ip Chun is not impressed and shares his own point of view on the William Cheung Controversy.

Ip Chun's POV

Ip Chun, who is Yip Man's son and a Wing Chun Master himself shares his take on the William Cheung Controversy. In fact, he remembers William, in this video called Cheung Cheuk Hing, as a very lazy student. In fact, the laziest one among Yip Man's students. Ip Chun says that William was too busy "womanizing" to focus well on his Wing Chun. So, basically, William Cheung's different Wing Chun would be explained by William's lack of memory.

Ip Chun argues his version by reflecting on why would ever a master teach different Kung Fu to every student. And how would that even be possible? Imagine this in real life: In fact, Yip Man had many students, too many to teach two different systems at the same time.
However, Ip Chun points out that even when all of the students are taught the same Kung Fu, each one does it differently. Imagine, one teaching and many, many different understandings of it.

But even in this case, this argument still doesn't justify the differences in William's Wing Chun. In fact, it may happen that different masters teach one concept differently, but if the core and the base behind it it's the same, it's ok. However, Ip Chun claims that even William Cheung's base is different.
To make things even more interesting, this is not the first time that William Cheung was involved in a Wing Chun Controversy or scandal. If you're interested in knowing more, you can enjoy the following article about the clash of two Wing Chun clans.

Ip Chun: How to Learn Wing Chun

Beyond the so much beloved "Wing Chun Community Gossip and Drama", Ip Chun actually points out some salient concepts concerning the learning of Wing Chun. What is so important to comprehend while learning Wing Chun, is that first and foremost, you're learning Wing Chun through somebody's personal experience. If the core concept at the base is well comprehended, this shouldn't however result in different concepts, but rather multiple explanations of the same concept. So, it is crucial to keep in mind the distinction between "teacher" and "system", furthermore between "personal interpretation" and "system".

Ip Chun is right on a 100%. My sifu taught Siu Nim Tao to novices only himself. He always stressed the importance to preserving traditional foundation of Ip Man's Wing Chun. I strictly follow this order teaching my students.

Music like martial arts is constantly changing. It would be boring if it didnโ€™t. Coffee is a good example. Different flavors makes it enjoyable.
