The release of Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood generated a lot of criticism towards Tarantino's depiction of Bruce Lee in a scene of the recently released movie. Among them is the notorious Donnie Yen.
In his latest movie, Lee was depicted by Mike Moh as an arrogant movie star whose fame took the best out of him. In addition, in the scene, he was beaten up by the stuntman Cliff Booth, played by Brad Pitt.
While promoting Ip Man 4 on a world tour back in 2019, Donnie Yen was asked to address the film scene that divided various fanbases into two factions. Those who say it's just fiction and those who feel their idol was disrespectful.
Tarantino addressed the situation by saying that Bruce Lee was kinda an arrogant guy, and that's also the reason why he decided to portray him in that way.
This upset many people who regard Bruce Lee not only as a martial arts and martial arts movies icon but also as a humble yet self-confident person and philosopher.
Donnie Yen said that he knows Tarantino personally but that he's very disappointed by the way Tarantino choose to portray Bruce Lee in his movie.
"As filmmakers, I feel we should be more respectful towards someone like Lee, who has contributed so much to our Industry," said Yen. (source)
Donnie Yen isn't the first one to go after Tarantino for the arrogant depiction. In fact, Shannon Lee, Bruce Lee's daughter, felt she was the right person to address this issue.
